Hunger is prevalent throughout America, and it exists right in your community. Fortunately, there are nonprofit organizations dedicated to ending hunger throughout our neighborhoods—from food pantries that assist those in need to nonprofits that work with local retailers to recover food that would otherwise go to waste.
But these organizations can’t do it alone, and often they rely heavily on residents like you to support them in fulfilling their mission to end hunger in their communities.
Wondering how you can get involved? Here are four small everyday ways that you can help end hunger.
1. Donate your time.
Nonprofit organizations like ours depend on the help of volunteers to assist in the fight against hunger. In fact, every year here at Feeding Westchester, we rely on more than 11,000 volunteers who dedicate nearly 30,000 hours of their time!
Many nonprofits focused on reducing hunger have a number of ongoing programs and projects, and they count on people like you to help make them a success. From planting produce at a local farm site and packing goods at a warehouse to volunteering at an event where proceeds are donated to the cause, there are many ways that your time and talent can be valuable to a nonprofit. Many organizations have team opportunities for corporate, community, and school groups, and they also offer options for individuals and families who would like to volunteer together. Touch base with your local nonprofit to see what your volunteering options are.
2. Give back financially.
A dollar goes a long way in helping to feed hungry families. Many nonprofit organizations that are focused on reducing hunger offer a number of donation choices, which may include a one-time or recurring donation online, the option to start a fundraiser, or the ability to give in memory of a special person in your life. Unique ways to donate include creating a memorial fund or celebrating a special occasion by directing gifts to a nonprofit.
3. Attend an event.
Many nonprofits host events that raise money for the cause, including walks to end hunger and meal packaging events. Visit the websites from local nonprofits in your area to see what upcoming events you may be able to participate in. Not only will it be a fun way to spend a day, but you’ll also be helping to give back to your community!
4. Designate a charity of your choice on your Amazon account.
One easy way to make an impact is to automatically select a portion of your purchases on Amazon to go toward supporting a charity that fights hunger—at no extra cost to you. Simply shop via AmazonSmile and designate your charity of choice, and Amazon will donate 0.5 percent of the price of eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the organization.
Not sure which of your Amazon purchases will qualify for charitable donations? Just look to find "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” noted on the product details page.
These small initiatives will help you fight hunger in your community—because even one person can make a difference.
One person can make a difference.
We won’t be able to end hunger overnight, but together, we can make giant strides toward fighting hunger and feeding our neighbors in need. Consider donating your time or money, attending local events, and giving back to charities close to your heart. You can make a difference!
